Smurfit Kappa’s Pitea Kraft liner mill restart, delayed
Smurfit Kappa have put back the restart of their 700k tonne pa Kraft liner mill in Piteå, Sweden.
The previously reported upgrade to their boiler has taken longer than anticipated, due mainly to poor weather conditions. The revised date for the mill’s two paper machines to come back on-line is mid-September, which is only approx a week later than was originally hoped,
This shut-down coupled with some scheduled maintenance to one of SCA’s major Kraft mills over the summer, has resulted in a reduced supply to the market. This has led to lower paper inventories, easing some of the deflationary pressure that was growing. European Kraft prices have now stabilised just in time for the increased demand as we enter the busy fourth quarter of the year.
