Weekly North American pulp & paper rail freight down 4.6% from a year ago


Figures released for North American pulp and paper railroad freight volume in the week ending Dec. 3 showed a drop of 4.6% compared to the same period last year to 9,687 carloads, the Association of American Railroads has reported.
For the first 11 months of 2011, pulp and paper freight at 458,155 carloads was 2.6% higher than for the same months in 2010.
Weekly pulp and paper freight in the US was down slightly by 0.2%, Canada dropped 11.3% and Mexico was 33.3% lower, AAR reported.
For the same week in December however, North American lumber and wood products freight lifted by an impressive 23.6% over levels a year ago and through the same 48 weeks of 2011 was 10.4% higher at 254,132 carloads.
Primary forest products freight rose 9.1% in the week but was down overall by 2.8% year-to-date.
